Introduction
To see clinical studies and expert committee position statements outlining the information summarized below, please visit the fish oil research section of this website.  Over 12000 scientific papers have been published concerning fish oil. New, effective applications of fish oil supplementation are being discovered on almost a daily basis. Early studies showed, and continue to show, that fish oil supplementation is extremely beneficial for cardiovascular health. As research in the area progressed fish oil supplementation began to be investigated in a wider and wider variety of situations. Some examples of areas where human studies demonstrate benefit from fish oil supplementation include:
  • Cardiovascular health: Fish oil reduces risk of sudden, fatal heart attack, reduces heart disease risk in otherwise healthy people, and reduces the risk of heart disease progression in people with existing heart disease.
  • Cholesterol levels: Fish oil reduces levels of harmful triglyceride and raises levels of beneficial HDL-cholesterol.
  • Benefit to mood and behavior: Fish oil has been shown to benefit depression, bipolar depression, ADD/ ADHD, anxiety, aggression, and others.
  • Prenatal health: Fish oil appears to benefit fetal development when supplemented to pregnant women.
  • Autoimmune disorders:  Fish oil has been shown to benefit a very long list of autoimmune conditions (arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, eczema, psoriasis, systemic lupus erythmatosus, and others).
  • Neurodegenerative conditions: Fish oil has been shown to benefit people with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, generalized memory loss, and others.
  • Diabetes: Diabetic individuals benefit from fish oil due to cardiovascular and cholesterol benefits, according to the American Diabetes Association.
